This is a well-written piece regarding the homework controversy. I would like to add:
* teachers should make sure pupils understand the core concepts before assigning any homework. there is no point doing homework without understanding
* student reflection on mistakes and learning points is important. if not, doing tons of “homework” will not help, because they keep repeating the same mistakes or misunderstandings but never learn anything.
Thinking beyond our current education systems, if education is ultimately identity development, including an identity of being a self-directed, life-long learner, then students ideally should set their own homework or projects, and hopefully be empowered to develop their sense of self-evaluation through scaffolding and mentorship.
