Finland is attempting to reform its education based on “topics” (article 1), however article 2 gives a crituque of the initiative.
I largely concur with the critique. Education is not just about topics, or even subjects. Note that discipline is more than just subject content knowledge, but it includes the whole shebang of the processes and practices of discovery, verification and knowledge acquisition. Focusing on “topics” without the disciplinary processes may water down rigour further, and at the same time reducing the learner’s identity to be a mere “worker”.
I would add that education is really about the development of an identity, which includes the dispositions, habits, values and ultimately who the student wants to be in this ever-changing world.
